Google Merging AdWords Extensions

How is the Call Metrics Extension number being meshed into the Location Extension?

The AdWords ad extension highlighted below includes the Call Metrics Extension phone number.  I have not seen Call Metrics (recently closed beta)  meshed with another extension before.

.

.

I have seen other ads with phone number and directions included along with the Location info but I thought the phone number was being generated from the Places account via the Location Extension.  This phone number is also displayed differently.  There is no + symbol as included with the sample screenshot above.

.

.

Has anyone else seen call metrics merged into a location extension before?

Comments welcome!

    Hi Kim,

    Call Metrics have me excited!

How are you “visually” identifying phone numbers generated by Call Metrics?

Can YOU visually recognize them by where they show in the ad and how they are formatted? or are you able to make the distinction because of your familiarity with the numbers?

Not sure many of us can tell what is merged and what isn’t at this point just by appearance.

  2. Hi Tom,

You can visually identify Call Metrics by its location.

Placement #1: is next to the title line
Placement #2: directly below the title and before what is normally line 1 of the text ad.

The call metrics number in the first screenshot could be mistaken as the newest change google made to the format of the ads – including line one text one the same line as the title. In this case though it is call metrics.

This is the first time I have seen it merged into another extension and includes the + symbol.

    Thanks for the comment Tom!

    Great Post Kim!

I have seen both the extension metrics merged for a few weeks now, it seems that Google is focusing more on the “directions” and call options than the general map extension shown before.

I think this is very useful as a user because local searchers use Google as a “yellow pages” looking for localized business listings including location, directions, or a phone number.

It will also be interesting to see if they integrate Google Voice and calling these “sponsored phone numbers” via their own service. I am sure this is in the works…

What is your early feel for action being taken based on the ad alone?

Guess I am presently surprised (even though the evidence is just beginning to trickle in) by the apparent willingness to dial a phone number without actually going to the website. For some sectors it will make more sense than others of course.

Lead gen from just the ad, exciting.

I believe that there has been great success on action just from a view thus far.

Less web savvy people now have the option to just pick up the phone and not leave their comfort zone.

Another interesting tidbit is that I think it is becoming more known by mass the differentiation of paid vs. organic results. Therefore people are more likely to see a paid result and look for an organic listing from the same business.

    • Hi Matt,

      Thanks for the comment.

I totally agree Google has something in the works – seems they always do :)

G closed the beta on call metrics a little over a week ago so I expect we will hear some news on it soon.

  4. So far I see people who are willing to call straight from the ad. I think different industries will see different result tho.

I mostly used it for some kind of tracking until we have proper phone tracking installed.

Right now there is no charge for calls via call metrics and Google has yet to announce if they plan to start charging some type of fee for calls generated via call metrics. The beta was recently closed so I expect we will be hearing Googles plans for Call Metrics soon.

Likely a larger plan being put into place :)
